Library User Guide

  1. Membership is free for all.
  2. Evidence of identification and proof of address (e.g., driving licence, passport, utility bill) is required to register.
  3. Children and young adults are required to have a parent or guardian act as co-signatory on their membership application.
  4. A Personal Identification Number (PIN) is associated with each library card and is a four-digit number selected by you. A PIN is required to access some services.  If you do not have a PIN you may obtain it at the desk in any of our libraries on presentation of your library card or get your PIN online
  5. Guard your PIN carefully.
  6. Age restrictions on library items must be adhered to and parental responsibility is strongly encouraged and promoted. Parental consent is required to move from one age category to another. Age categories are:
    1. Child from 0-11 years: Members may borrow items from the children’s collections and DVDs with a PG or U rating.
    2. Young Adult from 12-14 years: Members may borrow items from children’s and young adult collections and DVDs with a 12 rating.
    3. Young Adult from 15-17 years: Members may borrow items from all collections and DVDs with a 15 rating.                                                                                                                                
  7. Bring your library card with you each time you visit the library. Your library card enables you borrow library items or using a library computer. Computers may not be used without a valid library card.
  8. Your library card may be used at any library branch in the Republic of Ireland.
  9. All users may borrow up to 12 items at a time, with the exception of special category materials where limits on lending may apply
  10. The loan period is normally twenty-one (21) days except for special categories of materials. Library materials may be renewed in person, by telephone or online. This is provided no other customer has requested the items.
  11. You may renew items up to a maximum of three times. Items borrowed from libraries outside the county are not available for renewal.
  12. Loss or damage to library items: Library members (and parents or guardians for under 18s) are responsible for any loss or damage to borrowed items. Members must replace or reimburse the cost of the lost or damaged item.
  13. Loss of your library card should be notified to the library immediately as you are responsible for all transactions on your card prior to this notification.
  14. Food must not be consumed in the library.
  15. You must be a registered library member to use internet and computer services. A detailed computer usage policy is on display in the library and available online.
  16. Personal property cannot be left unattended while using library facilities. Owner do so at their own risk.
  17. Longford Libraries are compliant with all relevant health and safety legislation and provides a safe place for its employees and customers. Longford Library reserves the right to refuse admission or remove someone from the premises to anyone who behaves in an abusive or threatening manner to library employees or customers.  
  18. Library users must not be under the influence or use alcohol and illicit drugs while on library premises. Smoking and vaping are also prohibited.
  19. Please refrain from making or taking calls on your mobile phone in the library.
  20. Video recording or taking photos inside the library is prohibited except with the prior consent of staff.
  21. Young children must be accompanied by an adult at all times in our libraries. Longford Libraries adhere to national child protection guidelines.
  22. Anyone who is in breach of any of these regulations may have all rights of admission withdrawn with immediate effect.
