Is situated between the counties of Longford, Roscommon and Westmeath.
It is about 18 miles long, and varies from 1 to 7 miles in breadth. It is the second greatest expansion of the Shannon, and is studded with a number of handsome islands, amongst the finest of which are Hare and Quakers or Inchcleraun.
