Longford County Council, in conjunction with the Department of Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, is inviting applications the Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2018 (BHIS 2018). This scheme seeks to assist the owners/occupiers of protected structures with repairs to their historic buildings, and stimulate employment in the construction and traditional skills industries.

Eligible structures include:

  1. Protected structures.
  2. Proposed protected structures
  3. Structures within an Architectural Conservation Area or the amenity of a National Monument, where exceptional circumstances are deemed to apply.

€50,000 has been allocated to Longford County Council to grant aid conservation works. These may include:

  • Works essential to stabilise a structure or part of a structure and to reduce the risk to a structure from collapse or partial collapse, weather damage, fire, vandalism and unauthorised access.
  • Repair (or renewal) of roof structures, coverings and features, as well as rainwater goods.
  • Works to repair external walls, joinery and other fixtures, including stained glass windows.
  • Repair and conservation of internal structure and features.
  • Repair of machinery which is an integral part of a structure.
  • Increasing thermal performance and energy efficiency in line with the relevant Advice Series guidance.
  • Works to structures which contribute to the character of an ACA.
  • Relevant professional fees incurred for the portion of works funded: surveys and method statements, on site supervision and monitoring, reasonable travel and subsistence costs and sign-off on project.

A full list of qualifying works is available by clicking on this link

The grant amounts will be between €2,500 to a maximum of €15,000. The final grant amount will be dependent on factors such as the overall cost of the project, urgency of repairs, significance and the number of successful applications. Please note that previous grant allocations were typically below the maximum allowance.

The grant allocation must be matched by a minimum of 50% from private sources, i.e. a grant of €5,000 must be matched by €5,000 or more by the applicant. The overall project cost should include the cost of a conservation specialist, such as an architect with RIAI Conservation accreditation. The specialist should be on hand to design, oversee and sign-off on the works. Having a conservation specialist in place will be a condition of any successful grant.

Successful applicants are allowed to blend their grant allocation with other schemes, such as the Dept of the Environment's thatching grant, Structures at Risk Fund, SEAI grantetc., however, the sum of all of these grants cannot exceed 50% of the project cost.
