This parish lies in the N. of the County, in the baronies of Granard and Longford. The Granard portion comprises 7,219 acres, including 259 acres of Lough Gowna and 150 acres of smaller loughs. The Longford portion contains 34,221 acres, including 329 acres of water. The County of Leitrim lies on its northern, and along much of its western, boundary. County Cavan lies on its N.E. border. It is bounded on the E. by the phs. of Columbkille and Clonbroney; on the S.E. by Mostrim Ph.; and on the S.W. by the phs. of Ardagh, Templemichael and Clongesh.
The northern part of the parish consists mainly of mountain and bog; the southern portion is rich grazing land.
